P51 has been demonstrated to be shock-resistant and to retain its structural integrity under stress. The appellation "P51" has been adopted by virtue of the numerous features of the aircraft, which derives its nomenclature from the fighter North American P-51 Mustang, which was utilised during the Second World War. Polycarbonate was selected for construction of the monolithic domes housing the pilot. The Ray-Ban Aviator is renowned for its robust construction, capable of withstanding the impact of shrapnel and bullets, while maintaining sufficient transparency to necessitate the use of sunglasses with dark lenses by pilots. Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic polymer that is characterised by its transparency and its mechanical properties. These properties make it a suitable substitute for glass. The absence of colour allows 89% light permeability in the visible spectrum. WARNING! It has been demonstrated that the filament undergoes a loss of transparency once the 3D printing process has been applied. The material can be restored to its original transparent state by subjecting it to a post-press treatment with acetone.
