Making money with 3D printing: separate design, printing and selling

Want to earn through 3D printing by producing objects for other customers? With Node, the work to assess is making objects requested within The Genesys network. Start with your experience, available time and production costs to build a sustainable offer.

If your value is the design

A designer can upload a model through the Studio, choose a price and publish it. The buyer acquires a right to print and makes the object using Hermes and a supported printer. The file is not a download handed to the public. This distribution journey lets you present your work without selling a freely downloadable copy of the design.

The model alone does not bring an audience. Take care over images, title, intended use and the consistency of your collection. Show the project to people who may appreciate it and explain why you designed it. Do not assume a sales figure based only on followers: attention, interest and purchase are different things.

If your value is the physical object

The calculation changes. You must clarify commercial use of the design, assess material and labour, check the result and manage delivery. A model's availability in the Genesys catalogue does not amount to a universal licence to resell prints. Verify specific rights and terms before offering an object for sale.

One test on one machine is not enough to claim a piece suits every application. Choose uses consistent with what you can verify and describe. For a first project, a decorative or organisational object provides an easier context to explain than an unproven technical promise.

Calculate without shortcuts

Write down possible income separately from verifiable costs. For models, consider current creator terms and commissions; for physical production, include your time. Do not present a theoretical estimate as an achieved result. The first useful check is whether anyone wants your offer, followed by whether the price covers the work. Start with a small collection or one clear project, then choose the next step using what you observe.

Choose something you can observe

For your first project, write down what you want to learn: whether the presentation is clear, whether an audience recognises its use or whether the proposed price attracts concrete interest. These are different questions. Separating them lets you improve one thing at a time without attributing everything to printer quality.

If you design models, begin with a small collection you can explain. If you work on a physical product, complete rights and cost checks first. In either case, value comes from the offer and the people who want it. A working printer is part of the journey rather than an automatic measure of financial results.

Your next step

Put your printing experience to work on customers’ projects. Your next step is to activate your Node.
